Apple Introduces Solar Energy Programs to Clean up Chinese Supply Chain

Apple announced that they are starting two new programs aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its manufacturing partners. This program is so effective that it will be able to prevent over 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution between 2015 and 2020. The 20 million metric tons are equivalent to taking 4 million passenger vehicles off the roads for one year.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, talked about the clean energy program:

“Climate change is one of the great challenges of our time, and the time for action is now. The transition to a new green economy requires innovation, ambition and purpose. We believe passionately in leaving the world better than we found it and hope that many other suppliers, partners and other companies join us in this important effort.”

As part of Apple’s program, Foxconn will make a 400 megawatts of solar by 2018. This program is starting in Henan Province. To compare this to other provinces, Foxconn is planning to make their clean energy as clean as Zhengzhou factory. This Zhengzhou factory is the hub for the final production of iPhone.
