Altair – The Best Streamlined High Performance Computing System

At the 2014 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis, Altair’s PBS Works suite was recognized as the “Best HPC Software or Technology.” The PBS Works suite is designed to maximize an enterprise’s return on investment on existing hardware and software resources.

In order to reduce costs and consolidate their existing High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, Lockheed Martin worked with Altair to deploy a cross-domain security version of PBS. Lockheed Martin employs several federally-owned HPC programs that manage the HPC resources used by the government. In order to support multiple security domains, Lockheed turned to Altair.

The PBS Works suite features cross-domain system configurations for multi-level security, allowing users at different security levels to utilize the same HPC system. Previously, each security level had its own HPC system. Therefore, if personnel wished to access multiple data sets they would be required to log into multiple systems. By combing users at different security levels on the same system, users can access data sets of varying classifications. For example, if personnel with Top Secret clearance needed to alter data that was only classified as Secret, they would be able to access it from the same system as the Top Secret data. In addition, the system would automatically reset the security classification as Top Secret. Before, the user would have to manually change the security level. Now, Lockheed Martin can easily and securely manage HPC resources across more than 20 different security levels.
