Adobe Renames Flash, Focuses on HTML5

Adobe decided to rename Adobe Flash Professional to Adobe Animate CC. New material using the new name will roll out in early 2016. The Animate CC will incorporate the native HTML5 Canvas and WebGL support. It has been almost two decades since Flash Professional was first released.

Paul Gubbay, vice president at Adobe, commented on the name change:

“The name change is reflective of the fact that we rebuilt this tool to be platform agnostic. The name Flash Professional associates it with one slice of technology, and it’s not the one people are focused on now when they’re thinking about building new animations for the web.”

Over one third of content currently uses HTML5, which is created in Flash Professionals. Animate CC will continue supporting Flash and AIR formats. Additionally, it will also be able to output animations to virtually all formats including SVG.

Jeffery Hammonds, principal analyst at Forrester Research, explained Adobe’s strategy in today’s time:

“Adobe’s strategy is to make money regardless of what happens in the market. They understand that there’s a slow transition to HTML5 going on.”

Hammonds commented on how Adobe needs to adapt to the ever changing world:

“At some point you have to embrace the change. The rebranding is a visible sign of that, but the internal focus on supporting technologies like HTML5 has been going on a while.”

Animate CC utilizes the 360 degree rotatable canvas which allows users to rotate the canvas on any pivot point so they will be able to draw the perfect angle and strokes. It also has 4K video export, which allows for custom resolutions for Ultra HD and Hi-DPI displays.
