Energy Star 3.0 Server Spec to Look at Coprocessors for More Accurate Power-Efficiency Ratings

On March 24, 2016, Agam Shah has released an article on PCWorld discussing how Energy Star is planning to research coprocessors in order to increase that accuracy of its power efficiency ratings.

Energy Star’s version 3.0 server is made with the buyer in mind. The server was made so that buyers can understand the power efficiency levels.

The Energy Star specification for servers is being revised by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency which will help consumers and buyer make a better judgement when it comes to decisions on purchasing.

In order to revise the specifications for the Energy Star, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is paying attention to system design changes.

Coprocessors have been used in the past few years to make computing power more powerful due to the increase in the amount of given memory that is allocated in processing data. Although the memory has become more power efficient, this does not take away from the fact that the coprocessors are drain a lot of energy.

Energy Star has been already implemented in different types of products such as appliances, computers, and electronics.

While the old Energy Star 2.0 certification program was implemented and effective immediately in December 12, 2013, the new program will take FPGAs of field programmable gate arrays into consideration which is used in more servers in this time period. While FPGA’s are remarkably fast, they also use up a lot of energy which affects the overall power efficiency rating.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is also working along side with the European commission on Energy Star 3.0 for its servers.
