AT&T Teams Up with IBM to Improve Water Management in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas

AT&T and IBM have joined together with Mueller Water Products to develop a new solution to help cities conserve water. This system uses Internet of Things technology that can be quickly installed and utilized to help cities manage water flow and prevent leaks. 2.1 trillion gallons of purified drinking water are lost each year in the United State because of leaky pipes and broken water mains. Fixing the infrastructure would cost significantly more money than the government has the budget for. AT&T and IBM’s solution will provide a cheaper method that will retrofit existing pipes with acoustic sensors that can pick up if there are any leaks.

The jointly created solution notifies operators by making a particular sound. The data is sent to the cloud over AT&T’s wireless network, and uploaded into IBM software for water management officials to keep track of the infrastructure. If there is a leak detected, the software will then alert the managers. Although this will not fix the problem of water leakage, it will be able to provide the water managers with additional information to work with and could also provide insight to future investments. Currently, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Atlanta have gone through limited trials with the new solution.
