Samsung’s 750 EVO Makes a Comeback

Posted on July 7, 2016 Sara Lewis Samsung’s 750 EVO Makes a Comeback

In an effort to dominate the SSD market, Samsung has taken customer demands seriously and transformed the 750 EVO in what could be the strongest competitor in low priced SSDs. Typically overlooked, the 750 EVO may now shift retail sales from the 850 EVO – one of Samsung’s best-selling SSDs.

The 850 EVO’s popularity is owed to strategic planning. Samsung developed the 850 EVO to have more endurance and overall better performance capabilities than low cost SSDs. The price of the 850 EVO was set a few dollars higher than other manufacturer’s low-cost SSDs, which enticed consumers to spend a little more on a higher quality product. Despite its current market dominance, the 850 EVO has encountered a road block. With Toshiba and Micron lowering their prices to as low as $100 for a 512GB SSD, the Samsung 850 EVO costs too much to produce and may no longer be able to compete. This is where the 750 EVO takes over.

When it was first introduced, the 750 EVO was marketed in low capacity sizes of 120GB and 250GB. Samsung’s target was the system integrator market, and though it did well in that area its momentum slowed down as demand for 512GB went up. The new 750 EVO has a 512 GB capacity size, and it will still cost less to produce than the 850 EVO. Samsung uses comparable planar TLC flash on the 16nm lithography node to Micron’s, but it yields a larger bit output to keep a low price on this device. The cost along with the benefits to upgrading to the new 750 EVO gives Samsung a competitive edge. Consumers in need of multi-tasking computing software can turn to the EVO 750 that also comes with AES 256-bit hardware encryption which safeguards stored data, and comes with no moving parts to avoid corrupted or lost information from moving units.

The new 750 surpasses expectations by enabling features that are uncommon in entry-level SSDs. These include high write speeds, hardware-based encryption, and cutting-edge software packages. The technology included in this new SSD along with the cost will lead the 750 EVO to become Samsung’s top selling entry-level SSD.
